Wholesale Electricity Prices Plummet

 A recent report from the Australian Energy Market Operator sheds light on the impact of this renewable surge on electricity prices, revealing a remarkable transformation in the energy market.

 One of the standout findings from the Quarterly Energy Dynamics (QED) report is the dramatic reduction in wholesale electricity prices. These prices have halved from their fossil fuel-driven peaks in 2022, underscoring the profound influence of low-cost renewables on daily energy generation.

 Additionally, the QED report indicates that wholesale electricity prices averaged just $48/MWh in the December 2022 quarter, with increased renewables also driving emissions and emissions intensity in the country’s main grid to record lows.

 The impact of renewables on prices varies across states:

  • Victoria, with a bold 95% renewable energy target for 2035, recorded the lowest average quarterly prices at $26/MWh.
  • South Australia, already boasting 71% wind and solar, reported an average wholesale electricity price of $33/MWh, while Tasmania averaged $50/MWh.
  • On the other hand, New South Wales (54% coal) and Queensland (64% coal) had the highest average wholesale electricity prices at $66/MWh and $68/MWh, respectively.

 Decline of Coal's Economic Viability

Economists at the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources forecast a 50% reduction in the value of coal over the next two years as consumers increasingly turn to alternative energy sources.  Grid-scale solar output also jumped 23% to an average of 2,021 MW, reflecting a transformative change that aligns with Australia's commitment to sustainable energy practices.
